Lady Reddies Open GAC Softball Championship With A 6-2 Win Over ATU

Henderson State scored four runs in the final two innings to beat Arkansas Tech 6-2 in the opening round of the Great American Conference Tournament, Thursday in Bentonville, Ark.

The Lady Reddies advance in the winner's bracket and will face Southern Arkansas, Thursday at 6 p.m.

Henderson State, 29-23 on the season, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second-inning as Tricia Hock belted a two-run single to right field to plate Jaylin Baldridge who walked, and Kayla Williams who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.

Arkansas Tech, 31-26 on the year, tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth-inning when Whitney Robinson hit a two-run homer to right field.

Henderson State answered Arkansas Tech with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead.

Amy Halter led off things with a bunt single followed by a Amber Klug double to put runners on second and third with no outs.

Sarah Gipson drove in the go ahead run on a sacrifice bunt, with Ashlyn White scoring Klug on a hard hit ball to second base.

Henderson State added two insurance runs in the sixth frame as the Lady Reddies benefitted by three Arkansas Tech errors and got a run-scoring single by Klug.

The Golden Suns mounted a threat in the seventh as Ashley Savage and Robinson both had one-out singles.

White entered the game to pitch for the Lady Reddies and struck out Jalissa Gum for the second out. ATU loaded the bases when White hit Chelsea Reeves, but Victoria Huie flew out to Alicia Zack at shortstop for the final out of the game.

Kayla Williams pitched the first three innings allowing just two hits before Cagen Medlock entered the game and pitched the next 3 1/3 innings.

Medlock gave up four hits and struck out a batter in picking up the win and improving to 14-9 on the year. White picked up her sixth save on the year tying a Henderson record for saves in a season.

Hock ended the game going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored.

Klug, who was noticeably absent from the all-conference team, was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and also threw out a runner in the process. The senior from Kingwood, Texas who has started all 52 games at catcher this season, is hitting a team best .391 with 14 doubles.

Henderson State will be attempting to win its 30th game of the season for the first time since 2008 when it plays SAU.
