Box Score Amber Klug belted a 3-run walk-off home run to lift Henderson State to a 4-3 win over East Central Oklahoma, Friday at the Great American Conference Softball Championship in Bentonville, Ark.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh-inning,
Alicia Zack began the inning with a single to right field and advanced to second on an error.
Zack went to third when
Tricia Hock grounded out to the pitcher for the first out of the inning.
Amy Halter then reached on a fielder's choice when Zack got into a run-down between third and home. Zack was able to return to third safely.
Klug, who doubled earlier in the game, came up with runners on the corners and one-out. The senior catcher from Kingwood, Texas then took a Lacey Paulk 1-2 pitch over the left field fence to advance Henderson to the next round of the tournament.
East Central had a 1-0 lead before the Lady Reddies tied the score in the third-inning when Zack laced a double down the left-field line to plate
Kayla Williams who singled earlier in the inning.
Henderson State had golden opportunities in the fifth and sixth-innings to take the lead, but the Lady Reddies left two runners stranded in the fifth and the bases loaded in the sixth.
ECU took advantage of Henderson's misfortunes by scoring a run in the sixth and seventh innings to take the 3-1 lead.
Williams pitched well going 6 1/3 innings allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
Ashlyn White pitched the final two outs to get the win and improve to 7-3 on the season.
Zack, Williams, Halter and Klug had two hits each for the Lady Reddies with Klug having a double, home run and three runs batted in. The game-winning home run was Klug's fourth long ball of the year.
Henderson State, 30-24 on the season, won its 30
th game for only the fourth time since the program began in 1999. It is the first time since 2008 that Henderson has won 30 games in a season.
The Lady Reddies will face Arkansas-Monticello at 7 p.m., Friday night in an elimination game.
