Box Score 2 Henderson State a step closer to claiming its first ever conference championship in softball as the Reddies swept a double-header from Arkansas Tech on Monday in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Henderson State won game one 5-2 and held off ATU to win game two 2-1 to claim the four-game series after splitting a double-header from the Golden Suns on Sunday.
The first-place Reddies, 34-10 overall and 24-6 in the Great American Conference, need to win two of their last four games next weekend against second-place Southeastern Oklahoma to claim the conference regular-season title.
HSU totaled nine hits in the first game, and limited Arkansas Tech to just four hits to preserve the win.
The Reddies got on the board early in the first-inning to take a 1-0 lead after
Keirsten Seahorn singled to shortstop, allowing
Tricia Hock to advance from third base and score.
In the second inning, HSU would tack on another run as
Olivia Trapp singled just over the reach of second base to score
Ashlyn White and send the Reddies up 2-0.
Arkansas Tech would answer in the fourth inning with two runs of its own, but HSU broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, adding three runs to take a 5-2 lead.
A wild pitch scored
Taylor Daniels, while
Courtney Warren scored White after grounding out to second base, making the score 4-2.
HSU's final run came on a passed ball, as
Morgan South fired off the third base bag to narrowly escape being tagged out at home.
Seahorn and Hock both led HSU in hits with two each in game one, while
Ashlyn White picked up the win from the circle.
In game two, the Reddies managed just five hits, but a two-run home run blast in the bottom of third inning by
Sarah Gipson scored
Amy Halter, as Gipson picked up both HSU RBIs for the game.
Gipson recorded two hits in the game, while Halter, Seahorn, and White each recorded one for Henderson State's total of five.
Arkansas Tech scored its lone run in the top of the sixth to pull within one, and attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh as Whitney Robinson advanced to third base with two outs on the board.
However,
Michelle Sorensen struck out the next batter, Morgan Vaughan, to record the victory for the Reddies.
White once again was solid at pitcher, getting the win and improving her overall record to 11-2 on the season while striking out five batters.
Sorensen picked up the save, her third on the season – striking out four of the nine batters she faced.
HSU returns home for its season finale in a GAC four-game series against second-place Southeastern Oklahoma beginning Friday afternoon, with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
