Henderson travels to Monticello Thursday for matchup with Blossoms

The Henderson State women's basketball team will look to get back on track when it takes on Arkansas-Monticello at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night in Monticello, Arkansas.

Series:
The Reddies are 34-53 all-time against the Blossoms and lost the first meeting between the two teams this season 70-68 back on Jan. 14 in Arkadelphia. UAM's Treasure Evans hit a long, contested jump shot with 2.4 seconds remaining to give the Blossoms the road victory, despite 16 points, seven assists and seven rebounds from HSU's Pink Jones.

Henderson State Notes:
HSU is coming off of another tough week which saw them drop games to Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central. The Reddies are now 7-8 in Great American Conference play and 7-14 overall this season. They sit alone in fifth place in the GAC standings, but have five teams trailing closely behind them with six league wins. The top eight teams make the GAC tournament on Mar. 2-5 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Freshman Pink Jones returned for Henderson on Saturday against ECU after sitting for the SOSU game with an injury. She scored 16 points in 19 minutes to lead the Reddies in the loss. Jones is fourth in the GAC in scoring this season, averaging 14.7 points per game and is shooting 47.1 percent from the field on the year. She is also third in the league in steals, averaging two per game.

Fellow freshman Hailey Estes is fifth in the conference in rebounding with an average of 7.9 boards per game, making her the top freshman rebounder in the GAC. Estes is also second in the conference in 3-pointers made with 55 in 21 games.

Sophomore Brittany Branum is shooting 83.7 percent from the free throw line this season; the third best percentage in the entire conference. She has hit 72-of-86 attempts on the year.

Junior Haleigh Henson is averaging 36.7 minutes per game, which is second-best in the GAC and is also third in the league in 3-pointers made with 53 on the year.

The Reddies as a team, have attempted 574 3-pointers this season, the most of any team in the league, and are second-best in the GAC in turnover margin at plus 2.29 per game.

Arkansas-Monticello Notes:
The Blossoms are 6-9 in GAC play and 9-10 in the 2016-17 season. They are coming off of an 81-72 loss at home to Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday.

UAM is led by sophomore Ayesha Wahid, who averages 12.8 points per game, but feature a very balanced attack with four players who average double-figures in scoring.

Monticello is fourth in the GAC in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 66.8 points per game and are the best team in the conference in both 3-point shooting (35.7 percent) and 3-point defense (27 percent for opponents). The Blossoms, however, are second to last in the league in rebounding and have been out rebounded by 6.1 boards per game this year.
