ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State will get four extra games at its home field this weekend when the Reddies face Arkansas-Monticello in doubleheaders at 2 p.m. Sunday and 12 p.m. Monday. The games were moved to Arkadelphia due to inclement weather in Monticello on Saturday.
If recent history is any indication, the shift in scheduling could give the Reddies a leg up in the pivotal GAC series. Since 2013, the Reddies have won 14 straight games against UAM in Arkadelphia, and have never lost to Monticello at the renovated Dee White Field.
REDDIES REPORT
- HSU (21-23, 15-17) is currently in seventh place in an extremely crowded Great American Conference as just three-and-a-half games separate ninth place Southwestern Oklahoma State and fourth place Ouachita Baptist. The Reddies trail sixth place Southern Nazarene by a half game and Southeastern Oklahoma State by one game.
- Henderson is hopeful it can get the bats going after partaking in two pitcher's duels last Tuesday against Ouachita Baptist. Both teams scored a combined two runs throughout the afternoon. OBU took game one 2-1 in 10 innings before the Reddies took game two 1-0.
-
Marcela Lopez was one of HSU's few bright spots at the dish, going 3-for-4 including an inside-the-park home run which gave the Reddies their only offense of the day. Lopez now leads the team with a .390 average and a .482 on-base percentage. The centerfielder also made several spectacular plays with the glove, robbing Ouachita of multiple extra-base hits.
-
Christianna Camp returned from injury and got her first start since mid-March in the second half of the Tuesday doubleheader. Camp shook the rust off quickly with three solid at-bats including two singles through either side of the infield.
- The Reddies limited pitching rotation came up extremely clutch against Ouachita Baptist as both
Becca Almond and
Michelle Sorensen gave HSU two of the best performances of 2019. After working in and out of trouble in the first and second, Almond went 10 innings, spacing out 10 hits, but allowing just two runs and no walks. Unfortunately, HSU was unable to provide the run support Almond needed, and Ouachita spoiled the fantastic outing with a 2-1 victory. Sorensen, however, picked up the win in game two and allowed just three hits in a complete game effort.

SCOUTING ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
- Arkansas-Monticello (21-17, 14-16) is neck-and-neck with HSU in the GAC standings, although the Reddies have the slight advantage with a better winning percentage.
- Following a 7-1 start to conference play, the Blossoms have come back down to earth and are just 3-12 in their last 15 games. UAM has scored two runs or less in 13 of those contests.
- UAM comes into the weekend ranked in the bottom three in the GAC in most offensive categories including batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and runs scored.
- The Blossoms are led by freshman catcher Haley Godeaux who bats .300 with 13 doubles on the season. The Monticello lineup is rounded out by a quartet of respectable hitters including Sierra Gasca (.287), Caroline Tedder (.286), Jordan Herbner (.283), and Haley Cornell (2.82).
- For what UAM may lack in hitting, they make up for with one of the best pitching duos in the league. Abigail Leonards is the Blossoms' ace and one of the GAC's best in the circle. The senior comes into the weekend with an impressive 1.96 ERA, making her one of three GAC pitchers with a sub-two ERA. Leonards' performance only improves against conference foes, where she has been close to unhittable, amassing a 1.67 ERA. One of the keys to Leonards' success is her amazing command. She has only given up 13 walks in 107 innings pitched this season. HSU can also expect to see Hayley McGhee, who, despite her 6-8 record, sports a solid 2.83 ERA on the year. Opposing hitters bat just .218 against McGhee, who has 80 punch outs in 99 innings of work.
