KIAWAH ISLAND, SC — Henderson State turned in a 36-hole team score of 614 on Monday to finish the first day of competition at the 2020 Ocean Course Invitational in 13th place.
Swirling winds on the famed Ocean Course at Kiawah made life difficult for Henderson, particularly in the second round. HSU shot 291 as a team in the first round but heavy gusts hurt the Reddies in the final 18 holes of the day and dropped them nine spots from fourth to 13th.
Mitchell Ford had the best day of any Reddie with rounds of even-par 72 and 3-over 75 to settle into a tie for 15th overall.
Nick Shapiro found himself in 34th after carding a 2-over 74 and a 5-over 77, while freshman
Nathan Cossement ended the day in a tie for 54th with scores of even-par 72 and 84.
Christian Woods and
Stuart Krog rounded out the lineup for HSU and will enter the final round of play tied for 65th and 70th, respectively.
Ranked as the No. 4 public golf course in America, the Par 72, 6774-yard Ocean Course boasts of its unparalleled and challenging winds, stating, "[I]t's unlikely any other golf course in the world—outside the United Kingdom and Ireland—is affected as much by wind. From one round to the next, a player can experience up to an 8-club difference on holes depending upon the wind's direction and strength."
Lynn University leads the 15-team event after two rounds with a team score of 576. The final round of play begins tomorrow morning at 6:30 a.m.
