EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 16/17 Henderson State men's golf program reaches the Division II National Championships for the first time in program history, finishing as runners-up at the Central/Midwest Regional Championships.
Alex Hadden captured the program's first Central/Midwest Regional title as an individual for his first first-place finish of the season.
Records fell on the final day of the regional, as HSU set a program record for the best individual team round on a Par 70 course, shooting 13-under 267 in the third round, passing the previous record low round, which was 8-under 272. The Reddies would end the tournament with a 54-hole score of 16-under 824.
Hadden set the next record for the red-and-gray, smashing the best individual three-round score at a Par 70 event after carding a 10-under 200. Current teammate
Miller Harris held the previous record set last year at the Hardscrabble Invitational, where he shot 2-under 208.
Hadden, who shot below par in all three rounds, ended the 54-hole event with a 4-under 66 on the third day, matching his second-round score. The Eminence, Ky. native led the team with 14 birdies after seeing six on the last day, including four straight on the front nine.
Ethan Wilkins put in his lowest round of the tournament on day three, carding a 4-under 66 to end the event 4-under 206 and tied for 10
th. Wilkins was 1-under through his first nine holes and followed that with a bogey-free front nine where he shot 3-under. The First Team All-GAC player's six birdies in the third round brought his total to 11 for the tournament.
Nathan Cossement turned in the third score below par score, shooting 2-under 208 for the tournament and tied for 19th. The Warve, Belgium native carded his best round on the final day with a 3-under 67, recording four birdies and an eagle. Cossement tallied 11 birdies in the three rounds and was one of three players for HSU to record an eagle.
Miller Harris finished tied for 28th with a 54-hole score of even-par 210. Harris capped off the last day with a 2-under 68 with seven birdies, including four on the back nine, where he finished 2-under before going even on the front half. The Carthage, Texas native joined Cossement with 11 birdies across the three days.
Jacob Knowlton was flawless through his first nine holes of the third round, going bogey-free with three birdies. The Cabot, Ark. native ended the day 1-over 71, bringing his 36-hole score to 6-over 150. In two rounds of play, Knowlton recorded five birdies and 21 pars.
No.16/17 Henderson State now turns to Winter Gardens, Fla., where the Reddies will compete in the Division II National Championship for the first time on May 21-25.
