Avery participated in basketball from 1976-79. He was a three-time All-AIC from 1978-80, NAIA All-American in 1979, and led the Reddies to the 1979 NAIA national championship game. Avery was a member of the NAIA All-Tournament team in 1979 and led the NAIA in free-throw shooting during the 1977-78 season (91.5 percent).
