Dyer participated in football, basketball, and track from 1952-55. Named All-AIC in 1953 and 1954 (football) and team captain in 1954 (football). He was head basketball coach from 1963-78 and coached teams to eight AIC championships. Named AIC Coach of the Year in 1976-77, NAIA District Coach of the Year in 1973 and 1976. He was inducted into the NAIA and Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
