Sam Witherspoon played basketball at HSU from 1970 to 1974. Witherspoon is one of only two players in HSU history to score more than 1,000 points and total more than 1,000 rebounds in a career. Earning All-AIC honors in 1971 and 1972, Witherspoon ranks ninth all-time in scoring with 1,387 points for an average of 12.5 points per game in 111 contests. As a sophomore, Witherspoon averaged 18.8 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, totaling 606 points and 367 rebounds in 32 games. Witherspoon was a force on the boards, totaling 1,066 career rebounds for an average of 9.6 boards per game
